My Cat
I just have to write in black today because I am really, really frustrated.Last year he was only a little kitten and this year he is a 17# cat....... and he climbed our new beautiful tree and I don't know now what we will do. I certainly won't be laughing and taking his picture.... Maybe I should not have done it last year either, but it was so cute.... now what to do? Everything I think of will spoil it for us. I want to put my beautiful ornaments on the tree this year but was waiting. I really didn't think he would do it again. We have had many other cats and they were well behaved and didn't climb up the tree. Anyone have the problem and how did you solve it? I suppose that spray might work but it doesn't smell good does it...... darn darn darn !

I really don't know what you would do with a tree-climbing kitty. I know quite a few folks with cats, who don't have trees inside for just that reason. We are putting out tree outside. If it were inside, they would turn it upside down.
hi, we dont have that problem, but i was thinking, what if you use a spray bottle with water and when he goes near the tree, give him a stern NO! and a squirt in the face. it won't hurt him. and hopefully he'll get the idea after a few times. good luck! ~ b.e.c.
We also have 3 trees outside with lights on but I want one in the house. I will try the water but when we use that he usually runs like crazy and I am afraid he will really do damage when he does that unless I can get to him before he goes up. I heard hanging anything with a citrus smell works too so will also try that , thanks
I am a college student, and although we are not supposed to have animals in the dorm--you bet my roommate and I did! We had a cute little kitten--but boy was she a pain in the butt! She would climb out curtains, our shower...EVERYTHING! I talked to my mom, and she suggested that instead of that gross-smelling spray stuff the stores tell you to buy--simply fill a spray bottle with water, instead! One thing though--watch out for all the wires on your tree! <3
All three of my cats were tree climbers and plant eaters. The spray bottle of water worked wonderful. You don't wait until they are in the tree you spray them as they approach or even are close to it. Spray, spray, spray. It takes a few days but they get the idea. Then I leave the spray bottle near the tree and all they do is see it and they go away.
I have a new blog located here
Well I had 6 cats and they would all climb the tree. The best suggestion I have for you is not to put any glass ornaments on it. Also, Instead of a water bottle I always used a squirt gun (actually a super soaker). The other suggestion I have is a good sturdy cast iron base, this will prevent the tree from tipping over in case he does climb it.
Now I have a spray bottle of water close by but he hates that and I have to be careful not to spray when he is in the tree or it will be a bad scene as he jumps down and takes half the tree with him.... he is big. I got the citrus smelling stuff too and put some in the tree and sprayed around the tree and we saw him by the tree smelling it.... finally he left because we were watching and he knew we meant business.... time will tell I guess
Thanks for letting us know your new journal site Janice. Can't wait to see it again.... in case you didn't know it used to be Time and Again ;)
